Is it safe to swim with sharks in Sydney?
Yes—absolutely. At Bushrangers Bay, our shark dives are guided by expert instructors in calm, protected waters. We dive with non-aggressive species like the Grey Nurse Shark, Wobbegong Shark, and Port Jackson Shark—none of which are considered dangerous to humans.
What types of sharks will I see at Bushrangers Bay?
You may encounter:
Grey Nurse Sharks (gentle and critically endangered),
Wobbegong Sharks (bottom-dwelling and camouflaged),
Port Jackson Sharks (harmless and common along the NSW coast).
How many sharks will I see?
Typically, divers report seeing up to 20 Grey Nurse Sharks on a single dive. Sightings are highly consistent during June to December. In January 2023, one diver recorded seeing over 30 sharks in one session!
Can non-certified divers do the shark dive?
Yes! This experience is open to both certified and non-certified divers. Non-certified divers complete a short safety and skills session before entering the ocean.
Where is Bushrangers Bay?
Bushrangers Bay is in Shellharbour, approximately 90–120 minutes south of Sydney. Return transport from Abyss Scuba Diving is available.
What’s the best season for shark diving?
From June to December — the clearest water and peak shark activity.
Is this a shark cage diving experience?
No cages, no glass—just you and the wild ocean. This is a natural dive with Sydney’s local sharks.
Can I get photos of the dive?
Yes! Our instructors will capture your dive and share digital images with you free of charge. Certified divers may also bring their own camera.
What’s included?
Full gear rental, safety briefing and skills session, guided ocean dive, free digital photos, and optional Sydney transport.
What’s the minimum age?
Non-certified divers must be at least 12 years old. Certified divers aged 10+ are welcome. All minors must be accompanied by a guardian.
Does it count toward Open Water certification?
Yes! This dive can count as Dive 1 of your PADI Open Water Course if completed under the Discover Scuba Diving program.
